Do you remember this She-Oak Hill label?

Recently we were delighted to welcome to She-Oak Hill  Karen and Tony who had been purchasers of our 1989 Shiraz. They had been searching for our wine since recently finishing the last of their stock,  which they reported had aged beautifully. It was wonderful to meet them, hear their story and help replenish their supply. If you have a story of past vintages of She-Oak Hill we would like to hear from you too.

This wine was made for the She-Oak Hill by Leigh Hunt at his Huntleigh Winery on Tunnecliffs Lane. Lee  purchased his vineyard on the same day as my father in law in 1974.  He made wine for Gordon Leckie Snr from 1984 through til 1990. We still have a few bottles of each of these vintages in our museum stock and open them to enjoy on very special family occassions

After harvest

Posted by Jane Leckie. Filed under Vineyard

Since the end of harvest I have been trying to capture an image of  the peace that descends on the vineyard after vintage – but it has proven a challenge.

How can you visually reproduce the sigh of relief when the fruit is safely in the winery, the tractors are silent, the crowds of pickers have finished their work and the gas guns are turned off?  When the rising temperatures and  blistering winds are no longer an issue.

Gone is the tension created because the new barrels are held up by customs until the day before we start picking and the stress caused by the kangaroos recently developed appetite for grapes because there is so little other moisture around in a season where there were 36 mls of rain between the beginning of January and vintage in mid March.

It proved impossible to record the tranquility of an evening when the buckets are sterilized and stacked, the snips are counted and oiled and the kites are removed from their poles, the sugar testing equipment is stored away and the remnants of seemingly countless morning teas are cleared away.

So it is time to just breathe deeply and enjoy the quiet calmness – until next season.

Celebrating Wine Week

Posted by Jane Leckie. Filed under Community, Events

To celebrate Melbourne Wine Week, in the aftermath of the Royal Melbourne Show judging, Regional medalists were invited to join RMWA  medal and Trophy winners at the annual Uncorked event at Collins Place and to show their medal winning wines.

Promoted as ‘every wine lovers’ excuse to sip and savour over 300 medal and trophy winning wines from this year’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and regional Victorian wine shows’  it drew a big crowd.

The crowd at the Heathcote table was amazing and the feedback was fantastic. We had on tasting Peregrine Ridge Wine Makers Reserve  2005 Sparkling Shiraz,   McIvor Estate 2008 & 9 Shiraz,  Sanguine ’12 Progeny,  Heathcote Winery The Wilkins Shiraz 2010 and their Mailcoach Shiraz 2008 ,  She Oak Hill 2012  Shiraz and St Michael’s Fortified Shiraz.

The crowd loved the wines and the opportunity to talk to the people behind the wines, frequently commenting that a sales person just did not have the same insight, stories or passion for their product. I came back feeling so proud of  Heathcote and the point of difference we offer. I am sure we won plenty of new Heathcote enthusiasts on the night and it was a great experience to share the pouring with our fellow wine makers.
