Barrel Tasting of 2015 vintage

One of the most pleasurable tasks of a vigneron is tasting the batches of wine from the barrels. Each year under the guidance of our fabulous wine maker, Mark Hunter, we go through this process to decide whether or not to make a Reserve wine.

The batches may be different blocks of the vineyard, old vines or young vines. They may have had different oak treatments – new oak barrels or previously used oak or they may have experienced different wine making techniques – length of time on the skins, whole bunches added uncrushed etc. The fruit may have been picked at varying points of ripeness.

We don’t always make a Reserve Wine but the fruit from the 2015 Vintage was exceptional so the decision was to produce 50 cases.  The ’15 vintage will be bottled in July this year. Look out for it. I was too busy tasting and making notes to capture the serious part of the business when, of course, we are not adulterating the wine flavours and aromas with food but this photo captures the more relaxed assessment of the 2014 vintage which we are about to release.
